Cleaning & Caring for Sports Glasses: How to Make Them Last Forever
You have good sports glasses – now you want them to last a long time. Proper cleaning is crucial, as incorrect handling can permanently damage the polarization coating and anti-fog protection.
Proper cleaning: step by step
Step 1: Remove coarse dirt – sand and dust particles act like sandpaper and leave micro-scratches.
Step 2: Wipe with a microfiber cloth. Only use a clean, soft microfiber cloth. No paper towels, no T-shirts, no kitchen towels – they are all too rough for coated lenses. Dab the glasses dry instead of rubbing.
What you should NEVER do
Use hot water: Heat can damage polarization film and anti-fog coating. Always use lukewarm or cold water.
Window cleaner or alcohol: These agents attack coatings. Use only water and optionally mild dish soap.
Carry in your pocket: Along with keys and coins, the glasses will be scratched in seconds. Always use a glasses case or the included microfiber pouch.
Maintain anti-fog coating
The anti-fog coating is on the inside of the lenses. Clean the inside particularly carefully – preferably only with water and dabbing, not rubbing. Avoid touching the inside. Fingerprints on the inside accelerate fogging.
If the anti-fog effect wears off, a special anti-fog spray can help. Apply a thin layer to the inside and let it dry.
After sports: Clean immediately
Sweat contains salt and acid. If you simply throw your glasses into your bag after sports, salt residues will attack the rubber parts. At least rinse them briefly under water before packing them away.
Storage: How to avoid damage
Do not store your glasses in direct sunlight (dashboard). Heat and UV radiation can damage frames and coatings in the long run. A hard glasses case protects against scratches and deformation.
