Running Vest: Choosing the Right Hydration Vest for Long Runs

Once your runs exceed 60 minutes, drinking before and after is no longer enough. You need fluids on the go. And with that, the question arises: hydration belt or hydration vest? And what should you look for when buying so that the vest doesn't annoy you?

Hydration Vest vs. Running Belt: When Do You Need What?

Running belts are sufficient for runs up to 90 minutes. They carry one soft flask (250-500 ml) and your phone, that's it. Lightweight, minimalist, inconspicuous. Perfect for weekday training runs. More on this in the Running Belt Guide.

Hydration vests are the better choice for runs over 90 minutes and for anything where you need to carry more fluids, provisions, or equipment: trail running, half marathon preparation, long summer runs, or competitions. Two soft flasks (500 ml each) plus storage space for gels, keys, a jacket, and your phone.

What to Look For in a Running Vest

Fit and Comfort

A hydration vest must fit snugly without restricting movement. It shouldn't bounce or chafe while running – especially not with full bottles. Adjustable chest straps are a must so you can adapt the vest to your body. Always test the fit with filled bottles, not empty ones.

Weight

The vest itself should be as light as possible – every gram counts on long distances. Good hydration vests weigh between 180 and 300 grams when empty.

Soft Flasks vs. Hydration Bladder

Soft flasks are more practical than a hydration bladder with a tube. They are easier to fill, clean, and dry. Plus, they flatten as you drink more – unlike a hydration bladder, which sloshes around in your back. Make sure the vest includes soft flasks.

Reflective Elements

If you run at dusk or in the dark, reflective elements on the vest are an important safety feature. Especially during the transitional seasons when the days are shorter.

Running Vest in Summer: Heat Tips

In summer, cooling is crucial. A good vest has mesh material for ventilation. Fill the bottles with cold water or freeze them halfway. Drink every 15-20 minutes, even if you're not thirsty.

Don't forget eye protection: Running glasses keep sweat and sun out of your eyes.

Our Recommendation: Glow Motion Running Vest

The Livadora Glow Motion Running Vest: Simple design with reflective elements, smart storage options, and two 500ml soft flasks included. For shorter runs, the HydroBelt Running Belt is the slimmer alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size for a running vest?

Measure your chest circumference, choose the next smaller size – running vests stretch and should fit snugly.

How do I wash my running vest?

Hand wash with mild detergent, air dry. No dryer – it destroys reflective elements and mesh.
