Road Cycling Season 2026: Preparation, Equipment & Tips
The days are getting longer, temperatures are climbing above 10 degrees, and the roads are dry again: The 2026 road bike season is just around the corner. Whether you're getting back on your bike after the winter break or planning your first season as a newcomer, with the right preparation, you'll get the most out of the coming months.
Bike Check Before the First Ride
Before you saddle up, take 30 minutes for a thorough check: check tire pressure (6-8 bar depending on tire and weight), test brakes, oil chain and check for wear, cycle through gears, tighten quick releases, check handlebar tape.
If you're unsure: annual service at a specialist dealer. 50-80 Euros is a good investment.
Equipment for the Spring Season
Clothing: The Layering Principle
In spring, temperature differences are significant: 5 degrees in the morning, 18 degrees in the afternoon. Opt for layers: long-sleeved jersey, thin wind vest for descents, arm warmers or leg warmers.
Cycling Glasses: Mandatory from the First Ride
Wind, insects, pollen, and low-standing spring sun – your eyes are constantly exposed to strain on the bike. Cycling glasses with polarization and UV400 are not an option, but basic equipment. On wet roads after spring rain, polarized lenses significantly reduce glare. Details in the Cycling Glasses Guide.
Don't Forget to Drink
Even at cooler temperatures, you lose fluids. Take a bottle with you for rides over 60 minutes.
Training Structure After the Winter Break
Week 1-2: Build Base Endurance
Start easy. 60-90 minutes at a low heart rate, basic endurance (GA1). No speed, no mountains, no competition. Your body needs to get used to riding outdoors again.
Week 3-4: Increase Volume
Increase to 90-120 minutes. Include one moderate climb per ride. 2-3 times a week, with a rest day in between.
From Week 5: Incorporate Intensity
First intervals: 5-minute blocks at increased pace with 3-5 minutes recovery. Or hilly routes for natural intensity changes. Long base rides (2-3 hours) remain the foundation.
Road Safety
Visibility: Bright jerseys and reflective elements in changing light conditions.
Road Condition: After winter, watch out for potholes, gravel, and wet leaves. Cycling glasses with high-contrast lenses help detect unevenness.
Helmet: Check for cracks, straps, and padding.
Your Season Checklist
Bike check or annual service, helmet check, cycling glasses with polarization and UV400, jersey and wind vest, spare tube and mini pump, water bottle.
